The Company has recently updated its booklet on "Sustainable Fish" (click here to view) as part of its commitment to sustainable fisheries.
Sustainablilty issues, including a call for an end to discards, were at the heart of the Company’s submission to the European Commission on Reform of the Common Fisheries Policy (click here to view). CFP Reform was discussed at a meeting at Fishmongers’ Hall on 11th January 2011 convened by WWF-UK (www.wwf.org.uk) and attended by the Fisheries Minister, Mr Richard Benyon MP.

The Company has supported Sustain (www.sustainweb.org), which on 11th January 2011 launched a challenge for London to become the world’s first Sustainable Fish City. The Company is encouraging others in the City of London, notably the other 107 Livery Companies, to follow its example in serving at functions which they organise “only responsibly-sourced fish and shellfish, fished in sustainable ways, including responsible aquaculture”. It makes information sheets available to its members and guests at dinners specifying where fish and shellfish served were landed or produced and how they were fished.
During 2010 Fishmongers’ Hall was the venue for 87 fish and fisheries-related meetings organised by the Company and affiliated organisations or by outside bodies, with a total of 2267 participants. Many of these meetings addressed issues of sustainability.
