Almshouses

6/18/2010 2:30:00 PM

For nearly four centuries a major part of the Fishmonger's Company’s charitable work was in the provision and maintenance of almshouses for needy members of the Company or their widows or widowers and for other disadvantaged people in the local community. Over the years the number of almshouses in our care has dwindled, and in 2009, following a strategic review, the Company decided to seek a transfer of trusteeship to specialist almshouse providers of our two remaining almshouses charities: Jesus Hospital at Bray in Berkshire and Harrietsham Almshouses in Kent.

The Company is pleased to announce that, with the support of the Almshouse Association and the Charity Commission, trusteeship of the Harrietsham Almshouses charity was transferred on 31st March 2010 to the Cutbush and Corrall charity and trusteeship of the Jesus Hospital charity was transferred on 3rd June 2010 to the Donnington Hospital Trust. These transfers will ensure a secure future for these historic almshouse charities, for the present residents of the almshouses and for future beneficiaries of the charities.
